We’ve compiled a list of useful resources that we hope will help you on your road to recovery as you learn more about mental illness. We may update this list regularly, so if you or a loved one are struggling with your mental health, please bookmark this page for future reference.

  1. ReachOut.com – ReachOut.com is a non-profit mental health service for youth in Australia. It’s focused on outreach, support, and encouraging early interventions.

  2. Black Dog Institute – an internationally renowned centre of excellence offering specialist expertise in mood disorders, uniquely combining advanced research, education, clinical interventions and community support in the one facility. http://www.blackdoginstitute.org.au

  3. SANE Australia – SANE Australia is a mental illness charity that uses education, research, and other programs to provide mental health support for those with illness as well as their families and friends. Their helpline is also one of the more widely used numbers in Australia.

  4. Beyond Blue – Beyond Blue has helpful information for those that need help for anxiety, depression, and related mood disorders. http://www.beyondblue.org.au

  5. Headspace – Kids, teens, and young adults have different psychological needs. Headspace is the National Youth Mental Health foundation, with information and links to support. http://www.headspace.org.au/

  6. Mindframe Media – it’s important for media to have a thorough understanding about suicide in Australia before writing articles and reporting on the topic, and Mindframe Media has that information available.

  7. Butterfly Foundation – The Butterfly Foundation is an organization that provides mental health support and education for those that have body image issues or struggle with eating disorders. They also provide support for friends, family, and partners. http://thebutterflyfoundation.org.au/

  8. Carer Gateway – Caregivers often have a difficult time with their own emotional and psychological needs. Carer Gateway provides support services to the over 2.5 million Australians that are in need of support. www.carergateway.gov.au

There may be a time when you or a loved one needs help right away. The following are some helplines that provide immediate counselling and support for those in need.

  1. Lifeline – An organization that provides a 24-hour phone counselling service, primarily for adults, to those that are in need of more immediate support. http://www.lifeline.org.au/

  2. Mensline Australia – Support organization for men that need help with their relationships, family, or mental health.

  3. Kids Help Line – An organization for kids, teens, and young adults that is both confidential and anonymous and capable of providing immediate phone and online counselling support for those between the ages of 5 and 25.

  4. PANDA – National Perinatal Depression Helpline – PANDA provides a helpline for those struggling with mental health or need support during pregnancy or after childbirth. It is also available for friends and family.
