What is rTMS?

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) is a non-invasive treatment that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate the brain. This therapy delivers repetitive magnetic pulses to activate nerve cells in the brain region that regulates mood, which often shows reduced activity in individuals with depression. Repeated stimulation of this area has been shown to have an antidepressant effect.

What happens during rTMS therapy sessions?

During your rTMS session, you will sit comfortably in a chair and wear earplugs to lessen the sound of the treatment. A trained technician will position the TMS device over your head to target the specific brain structures. As the session progresses, you will hear a 'tap-tap-tap' sound from the coil at varying intervals.

Will the treatment hurt or cause side effects?

rTMS therapy generally does not cause the side effects associated with antidepressant medications. Some patients may experience mild discomfort or a headache, but most can resume their normal activities immediately after treatment.

How long does rTMS Therapy take?

Each rTMS session lasts between 6 and 20 minutes. The overall treatment typically spans 2 to 6 weeks, with daily sessions varying based on your specific treatment plan.

Do I need a referral?

Yes, a referral from a GP or psychiatrist is necessary. You will need an initial assessment with a Consultant Psychiatrist to evaluate your suitability for rTMS and to prescribe the treatment.

Is rTMS covered by Medicare?

Medicare may provide coverage if you have been diagnosed with a depressive illness, not previously received rTMS treatment, and tried at least two different classes of antidepressant medications without success.
